Two Household Staples that will Fix Funky Towels!

You know how your favorite bath towels can get that “funky towel smell”? Well it is not because of lack of washing them, but actually from the build up of laundry detergent and fabric softener. This residue also leaves the towels unable to absorb as much water as they once did.

Rather than running into your favorite retail store and stocking up on new towels, try this simple at home remedy using vinegar and baking soda!

Run your towels through the washing machine two times using hot water and NO detergent or fabric softener.

The first time add one cup of vinegar and the second time around, add 1/2 cup of baking soda.

The idea is to strip the residue from the towels.

I tried this recipe out yesterday with old towels that I was just going to use to dry off our dog after rainy days. But after trying out this recipe, they are worthy of human-use once again! So yes, this does work! Yahoo!

*Side note: I do not have a high efficiency washing machine, so I am not sure if this recipe can work with your machine. It is best to check with the manufacturer.

  1. Vinegar, although a weak acid, is actually bad for your washing machine in the long run. It will eat at the rubber hoses and gaskets and shorten their lifespan. This probably won’t happen overnight, but continual use will cause problems.

    • Thanks for the heads up! I was thinking about using it once a year or less, just for towels. But it is a good thing for everyone to keep in mind. :)
